On Wednesday, April 10th, tens of thousands of community, labor and immigrant rights supporters will converge on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. The are gathering to urge Congress to pass common sense immigration reform NOW that includes a roadmap to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants.

GHRC supports the right of people to stay on their land, and advocates for immigrant rights in the U.S., including a just and comprehensive  immigration reform. There are an estimated 1.5 million Guatemalans in the United States, despite record rates of deportations over the last four years.

Guatemalans migrate northward for a variety of reasons including endemic violence, human rights abuses and a lack of economic opportunities at home. U.S. policies, including the Central American Free Trade Agreement and investment in mega-development projects, destroy local economies and push people further into poverty. Ongoing support for the Guatemalan Military and the "war on drugs" in the region have contributed to generalized violence as well as repression and targeted attacks against civil society, forcing Guatemalans to leave their communities. 

No matter what the reason for migration, immigrants deserve to be treated with respect. They should not be criminalized or separated from their families through deportation. Join GHRC and tens of thousands more to demand that Congress take action now to repair our broken immigration system.
